German Passion in Sports

Germany is not only superior when it comes to technology and modernisation, but also in the field of sports. In fact, as testimony to the claim that sports forms an integral part of German life, 27 million Germans are members of a sports club and an additional 12 million are individually pursuing such an activity. The most popular sport is Association football, which is more commonly known as football or soccer that is being governed by an international football association known as FIFA (Federation Internationale de Football Association).

The country is also one of the leading motorsport countries on the planet where race-winning drivers, teams and cars have come from. Michael Schumacher has been considered the most successful Formula One (Formula 1 or F1) driver in history, setting the most significant motorsport records during his career and won more championships and races than any other race driver. F1 is currently officially referred to as the FIA (Federation Internationale de l'Automobile) Formula One Championship. As the most expensive sport, Formula 1 is a massive television event with a global audience of 600 million people per season.

German sportsmen have also attracted attention as the most successful contenders in the Olympic Games throughout history. They have ranked third in an all-time Olympic Games medal count by combining East and West German medals. In the 2006 Winter Olympics, they finished first, while fifth in the 2008 Summer Olympics. However, there are also other German sports activities in the country, including volleyball, basketball, field hockey, and track and field events. Tennis is also a notable event in the country as it is one of the favourite German sports where Boris Becker stunned the world by winning the Wimbledon trophy at a very young age, among other awards. Of course, nobody can forget Steffi Graf, another legendary tennis player who won several awards as well.
